Major Bean At Mt. Treasures

Who is Major Bean and why is his picture and name on the advertising and website for the Major Bean Coffee & Sandwich Company at Mountain Treasures in Red River NM? He was not a military man, but he was the great-great grandfather of Margy Spillers, who with husband Patrick and daughter Mahala are the new owners of Mountain Treasures Gallery/Bistro. From Elk City Oklahoma, they own several businesses in that town, including a coffee and sandwich shop called… Major Bean Coffee & Sandwich Company! “We want to be known for being a little different from the other places in Red River,” says Margy about new items on the menu, but adds that Mountain Treasure favorites will remain. She and her dad were Mountain Treasures fans when visiting Red River. Coffee is a mainstay on the menu. Margy and Mahala are certified baristas, attending barista school in Dallas. “If we were going to open a coffee shop we thought we should go. There’s more to coffee than pouring...

The Ski School’s first director, German Olympic Team skiing ace Toni Woerndle, insisted that skiing should be fun! That philosophy remains in effect today. Red River Ski School Director Larry Simpson is excited about the coming 2016-2017 ski season and he can’t hide his enthusiasm about the Golden Explorers program. “We’ve changed our setup for the youth class products. We’re now able to offer 3-5 year-old, 6-8 year-old and 9-12 year-old age brackets so that they’re all separate! Each group has its own methodology for learning! “The littlest folk learn differently than the middle-agers, who learn differently from the older students. We’ve adapted our programs, creating space in the youth center for the littlest ones and the middle age group, while the older groups will...
