So you nap is over and you're wondering: "What else is there to do around town?" Here are just a few suggestions of great ways to amuse yourself:
1. Take a scenic ride along mountain trails. Rent a horse at a local stable and take a good, long look at the surroundings as you ride slowly past. It's a great way to slow down and enjoy the day, especially under a Red River sky.
2. Take a chair lift ride to the top of the Red River Ski Area and hike back down among the wildflowers. Take a camera for some incredible nature photography. The more adventurous can take a mountain bike up and ride one of many trails back to the bottom of the mountain. P.S. Face flops are discouraged.
3. Rent it and take a trip. Go on a family surrey ride around Red River and enjoy the sights as you pedal away. Be sure and stop for deer who may be crossing the road and don't go so fast you forget to stop and enjoy the sights and sites. You can rent single bikes if you'd rather pedal alone.
4. Set up an easel and paint the local scenery or wildlife. Use lots of green and blue. If your artistic taste is greater than your ability, enroll for a workshop at Mountain Treasures Gallery.
5. Play a round or two of golf at the Red Eagle Golf Course, located half way between Red River and Eagle Nest in the incredible Moreno Valley. You can even brush up on your game with lessons from the pro or just drive a few long shots on the driving range. Rent a cart and cruise in style. The scenery alone may make it hard to concentrate on you game. (Check for opening date.)
6. Got some binoculars? Go birdwatching and look for all those winged creatures you don't get to see at home. Hummingbirds, eagles, nuthatches, Grey Jays and pine siskins aren't hard to spot. You're likely to see a few deer while you're at it.
7. Have a picnic in the park and try not to share your lunch with chubby chipmunks who inhabit Mallette Park. You can also play a rousing game of disk golf there and enjoy the cool mountain air.
8. Go stargazing - on your own or with a guide - and see whole galaxies you've never seen before. Night Sky Adventures has some BIG telescopes and the Milky Way is one of the best shows in town!
9. Rent a Jeep or book a seat with a jeep tour company. It's the best way to enjoy historic sights, gorgeous scenery, and some very tall tales.
10. Some gave all. Visit the Vietnam Memorial, located in the Moreno Valley on the road to Angel Fire. It was the first memorial built to honor and remember those who served their country. It is a moving monument to peace.
