The Little Brown Chapel in the Wildwood
Every year, Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter, delirious couples head to the mountains with one purpose in mind: getting married! It's been part of the Red River scene as long as anyone can remember and has become quite a phenomena, leading some folks to label Red River the Wedding Capital of the High Country.
That may be a bit of a stretch, but not if Jolene Bullington has her way. A long-time resident, she has been involved in professional wedding planning since 1996 and her latest project is a logical step for the Texas native.
The Wedding Chapel is located at 720 East High Street, one block from "The Y." It's a small facility designed for the couple who doesn't want a big wedding, but would like something more than getting married in the park. And yes, the building is brown like the Little Brown Church in the Wildwood.
It is dedicated in remembrance of Jolene's parents, Jo and Edward Fasnacht.
"Both my parents were very talented," Jolene says as she gives a tour of the chapel. "Mother was a watercolor artist in her 80s and, in January before she died, she was recognized by the Texas House of Representatives as "The Blue Bonnet Lady." Bluebonnets were her 'thing.' Some of her pictures will be on display here so people can enjoy them."
A giant mural depicting a mountain landscape with a wedding arch decorates the back wall of the tiny room, the work of Red River's Kathy Pruitt, whose mural work and painting of area scenes are visible throughout town.
"Jolene wanted the arch. She also wanted local flowers work in, and we have other things like a lady bug, a hummingbird and a butterfly around the flowers."
