The question is frequently heard in Red River during the summer months: "What do you do around here in the winter?" This happens despite the fact that the Red Chair Ski Lift in the middle of town is busy in motion taking sightseers to the top of the world for a spectacular view of Northern New Mexico and Southern Colorado. So what goes on here in the winter? Funny you should ask.
The Great Outdoors
· Red River has been called The Ski Town of the Southwest, a title it well deserves with the Red River Ski Area located in the middle of town and the Enchanted Forest Cross Country Skiing and Snowshoe Area located on nearby Bobcat Pass. Don't worry if you've never skied before because both Ski Areas have an excellent reputation for teaching the art of Alpine and Cross Country skiing.
· Snowmobiles were invented as a means of transportation for industries and law enforcement in places with large amounts of snow. It wasn't until the mid-1960s that the machines began to develop for the winter recreation market. Today, snowmos are a great way to have some fun and see sights inaccessible by regular means of transportation. Red River has five companies that offer guided snowmobile tours to the high, high country. In addition, privateers frequently haul their machines to town to take advantage of trail grooming.
· Winter or Summer, the 84-mile loop known as "The Enchanted Circle" is a sightseers' delight. The variety of terrain provided by altitude - 9800 feet at Bobcat Pass to nearly 7000 feet in Taos - and inspiring vistas in all directions keep the journey exciting, with ever-changing picture postcards around every twist and turn in the road.
Indoor Fun
· Go Shopping. America's #1 sport, creative shopping is alive and well in Red River's wide variety of shops, stores and galleries. Summer or Winter, there are always great things to be found. You can even buy a camera.
· Like your music live, not canned? Après Ski is a fancy term for fun after a great day on the ski slopes and trails. Chubbies Tavern in the Alpine Lodge has a proud tradition as a home for great live music. Texas Reds Steakhouse has also been known to have fine entertainment in the Lost Love Saloon and local coffee houses often feature acoustic music performers. If your taste leans more to the dance floors and classic American honky tonks, the legendary Motherlode Saloon and the Bull O' The Woods Saloon, located on East Main Street, across the street from each other, have dance bands on a regular basis to minister to your 2-step-rockin' blues-waltz steppin' needs.
· He's got a cabin on the pass and Michael Martin Murphey is unquestionably Red River's most famous ambassador to the world. His long-time run at the Red River Inn and his Red River Westfest celebrations of the American West have made him a popular fixture of the high country entertainment scene. His Cowboy Christmas Balls and concerts are a special treat. Check it out.
· Don't forget the Mardi Gras celebration, with Cajun music and food. What do we do here in winter? All of the above. And more!
