Rick FowlerRick Fowler will be appearing on a regular basis this summer at the newly remodeled cabaret in The Lodge at Red River. He'll be performing songs from his newest album, A Chase of Smoke.Rick Fowler is truly a quintessential 21st Century Gonzo Renaissance Man. Rick's artistic roots reach back to the mid-60s coffeehouses of McKinney Avenue where he shared billings with the likes of Mance Lipscomb and Townes Van Zandt. He played jugband music and blues on the late night street corners of downtown Dallas with Ray Wylie Hubbard and B.W. Stevenson while the Vaughan Brothers were beginning to rock South Oak Cliff. A founding member of the legendary Texas group "Three Faces West", they migrated to the southern rockies and opened their own club "The Outpost" in 1968 Red River. With guest appearances by Jerry Jeff Walker, Bill & Bonnie, and Willis Alan Ramsey, the club flourished well into the 70s. If you had the fortune of being there you would've heard the future of Texas Progressive Country Music tuning up. A short list of the artists who have recorded Rick's compositions include Gary P. Nunn, Jerry Jeff Walker, Hoyt Axton, Ray Wylie Hubbard, and The Lost Gonzo Band with such titles as "Compromise" (Ray Wylie) and "Prairie Madness" (Lost Gonzos). Rick stepped away from music for a decade before returning as a solo performer with a cache of new original songs and a comically easy rapport with live audiences. His new CD "A Chase of Smoke" was independently released to widespread critical raves. Combining his musical talent with a degree in Fine Art (TCU), Rick has illustrated numerous album covers including Michael Hearne's "Sight and Sound" which won the 2002 NMMIA award for best package design. At the heart of his artistic endeavors are his stunning acrylic and ink paintings that hang in private collections throughout the world. He currently lives in Red River, NM with his wife and two dogs painting and writing music.
