![]() For the past 25 plus years, photographer Carl Brown, owner of Southern Exposure, has been taking pictures of skiers at the Red River Ski Area, whitewater river rafters in the Rio Grande, weddings and family reunions at the top of the world, Century grind bicycle racers and Memorial Day motorcyclists. If it’s happened in Red River, chances are that Carl recorded the event on film. Today, some of the work is digital but SE is still synonymous with photographic excellence, with award-winning images seen in national and regional publications. In addition to taking pictures, Carl and his staff also offer photo finishing with a rapid turnaround time for visitors to town, accessories such as batteries and film, disposable cameras and specialty photo items that make unique souvenirs. The shop is near the corner of Main Street and Copper King Trail. Got The Eye? Red River is a great place to take pictures, ripe with opportunities and subject matter. Here are some suggestions that may help you in making vivid photographic memories. • Wildlife is always a great subject. Even in town the chances are good of encountering deer and even a bear on occasion. A word of caution, however: don’t let your enthusiasm for getting a great picture overwhelm your need for safety. A zoom lens is as close as you should get. The creatures are not pets and they can inflict damage. Deers have sharp hooves and bears...well, they’re bears. • The presence of water makes a perfect photo element. The Red River is easily accessible, while the creeks (Mallette, Pioneer, Bitter, Bobcat) may require a bit more effort to find the right “look.” P.S. Don’t fall in. • There are many places in town that serve as popular backdrops for vacation pics. The Red River sign in Brandenburg Park, the “Welcome” sign at the “Y,” the porch of the Little Red School House Museum, the boardwalk at Frye’s Old Town, the covered river bridge in Toni Woerndle Park, just to name a few, can help tell your story, bringing out the photo journalist in you. • The Red Chair Lift at the Red River Ski Area offers spectacular scenery photo ops and the view from the deck of The Tip Restaurant...Wow.
