Altitude - The altitude here is 8750’ and can cause problems for some folks. Try spending the night before arriving at a medium altitude before coming up here. Headache, dizziness, weakness and nausea are some symptoms of altitude sickness. Increase your intake of water and carbs but if symptoms persist or are severe, get your oxygen checked and/or go down to a little lower altitude until you adjust.

Information - The best place to get local information is the Visitor’s Center in Town Hall. Go in the front door and turn left. It’s always open.

Weather - While the daytime summer temperatures are usually around 75°, they frequently drop to 40-50° at night, so it’s a good idea to dress in layers like the locals and have warm clothes for evenings and afternoon showers.

Getting Around - Red River has a great public transportation system. If you need a ride, all you have to do is call Miner’s Transit at 575-770-5959 for a pick-up anywhere in town and they will deliver you to your in-town destination. It’s FREE. Regular hours are 8-5 daily, till about 10 or later on summer weekends. You can ask the driver about exact hours.

Internet - Many of the local lodges and restaurants and now have wi-fi, often free, as well as the Conference Center and Visitors’ Center. The public library at the “Y” has 24 hr. wi-fi, with picnic tables and power for laptops on the patio and five public access computers inside available during operating hours.

Restaurants - While there are many restaurants in town, most quit serving breakfast at 11 AM and dinner at 9 PM so plan your meals accordingly. The market also closes by 9 PM, sometimes earlier when it’s slow.

Church - There are several types of services held in summer: 1st Baptist of Red River, Faith Mt. Fellowship and Community House (N-D) and St. Edwin’s Catholic Church. Consult local paper for info. Mountain Institute (N-D - beginning meditation classes) - has information and schedule at mountaininstitute.com.

Medical - There is now a full-service dentist practicing in Red River, Dr. Richard Brown, whose office is located at the far end of the hall in Miners’ Mall (next to All Seasons). Stop in or call 754-2300 for an appointment.

Legalities - While nobody wants to deal with rules on their vacation, there are a few local and state laws that visitors should be aware of. There is a leash law, so keep you dog on one. No open containers of alcohol are allowed on public property so don’t walk around with an alcoholic beverage in your hand or drive down the street with it in your car- it’s illegal. Fishing and hunting licenses and ATV (OHV) permits are required by the state. Go to the Visitors’ Center to find out what’s required and how to get them. Drinking age is 21, ID required of all.
