Unless you have been living on a deserted island or in a deep, dark cave without cable or a satellite dish, youre no doubt aware of the New Mexico wildfires that were the focus of the world during the month of May. The Southwest section of the United States is experiencing drought conditions, particularly Texas, Arizona and New Mexico. However, large fires have also plagued Florida, Missouri and North Carolina. As of the end of May 2000, over one million acres had been consumed by wildfires nationwide. Many of these blazes were unintentionally triggered by human activity.
Local Information
The U.S. Forest Service always has some restrictions regarding the use of fire in the forest. If you intend to camp or even just visit a campground or wilderness area, stop at the nearest Ranger station - in our case, the station located outside of Questa - for permits, maps, information on forest conditions and up-to-date fire restrictions. Familiarize yourself with the regulations and restrictions. It could save your life.
Lightning
Not all wildland fires are caused by human carelessness. Lightning causes many fires every year. The weather in the mountains is capable of making rapid and dramatic changes. Pay attention to prevailing conditions and be constantly aware of clouds, wind direction and drops in air temperature.
Be particularly aware of lightning on mountain ridges. Since you will probably be the highest point around, get off the ridge when thunderclouds approach.
If youre trying to get to a peak in one day, leave early in the morning and avoid the afternoon thunder showers that are characteristic of mountain weather.
For nearly 55 years, the sight of a large black bear in a Forest Ranger hat has come to symbolize fire vigilance and prevention in our national forests. Ask the children - they know.
Remember Smokey
Smokey (the) Bear is a native of New Mexico, a survivor of a forest fire in the Lincoln National Forest which left him injured but alive. He has become one of the most recognized figures in contemporary America, with his ability to "smell a fire before it starts to flame." After all, thats how he got the name Smokey.
Remember Smokeys words: "Only You Can Prevent Forest Fires."
Dont be thoughtless with fire and help Smokey preserve the forest for future generations to enjoy.
