High Country Retreat

Fisherman Congratulations, my friends. Let me be the first to welcome you to our little town in the mountains.

You see, if you are reading this it means you’ve arrived in Red River, New Mexico, and your vacation adventure has begun. Whether you’re here for the entire summer, a couple of days, or even just a few hours, the wonder of the high country will have a profound affect on you.

It has even been said by more than one hopeless romantic, caught up in the inspiration of a fresh mountain morning or a chilly evening under a canopy of a trillion stars, that once you’ve been to Red River, "you’ll never, ever want to leave."

In the old days, getting here was not an easy task. If you came up the canyon from the west, you had to ford the river twenty-six times, on the old rutted dirt road.

If you came into the valley from the east, you had to stop at the top of the pass and tie heavy logs to the back of your wagon to slow you and the horses down while descending to the valley on the steep mountain trail.

The point is: you had to really want to be here just to get here.

The point today is that you are here now and that’s what counts. It matters little that you rode into town on a modern highway conducive to a smooth ride in, or on, your internal combustion-powered vehicle. You are here.

Relax and enjoy yourself. Take a walk by the river and listen to the rhythm of nature, flowing as it has for eons. Discover the deer standing motionless and hidden in the forest, their large languid eyes intently watching your movement. After all, you’re walking through their home.

Sit on the porch of a mountain cabin and watch the hummingbirds flit above your head, moving from feeder to feeder for a taste of the sweet sugar water that gives them the energy to dart about the valley all day long. Enjoy their flight - you sit back and relax.
