The Locals Recommend

Surrey Ride 1. Have a picnic in the park and share your lunch with pushy chipmunks while Mallette Creek babbles by on its way to the Red River.

2. Take a chair lift ride to the top of the mountain and hike back down among the wildflowers. Bring your camera along for some incredible nature photography.

3. Go on a family surrey ride around Red River and enjoy the sights as you peddle past. Be sure and stop for deer who may be crossing the road in late afternoon.

4. Play a rousing game of frisbee golf at Mallette Park in the cool mountain air .

5. Rent a horse at a local stable and take a scenic ride along mountain trails.

6. Get some binoculars and go birdwatching for all those species you don’t see at home. (Hummingbirds to eagles). You’re likely to see a few deer while you’re at it.

7. Set up an easel and paint the local scenery or wildlife. Use lots of green and blue.

8. Buy (or build) a kite and fly it in the park or by the river.

9. Get binoculars or a telescope and go stargazing - on your own or with a guide - and see whole galaxies you’ve never seen before.

10. Take a jeep tour, enjoy historic sights, gorgeous scenery, and some very tall tales.

11. Visit the Vietnam Memorial on the way to Angel Fire - a truly moving experience.

12. Listen to a free concert in the park or street music around town. Watch a demonstration by an artist or a magician’s slight of hand.

13. Enjoy an outdoor meal by the river on the deck of Capo’s, or spend Happy Hour on the Lift House deck or the lawn at the Alpine with a spectacular mountain view.

14. Hang out with the locals at the Black Crow - have an espresso for breakfast or sit and roast a hot dog over their firepit at night - fire regs permitting. Live music, too!

15. Catch the Frye’s Old Town gunfight at 4:00 high from late June through mid August on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Try not to laugh too hard.

16. Go to the melodrama on Tuesday or Saturday and hiss or boo the villain.

17. Visit our Little Red Schoolhouse museum or go over the mountain to the Elizabethtown museum for a taste of the colorful past.

18. Take a walk on one of the nature trails and learn about local flora and fauna.

19. Have a family horseshoe game by the river in Woerndle Park.

20. Sit on your porch, breathe deep and feel the cool mountain air fill your lungs. Watch the hummingbirds, and just listen to the river flow. And relax.
