Any Live Music In Town?

Michael Martin Murphey Mine Shaft Theater at Red River Inn

Michael Martin Murphey

As a young boy, Michael and the Murphey family came to Red River to gain relief from the summer heat of the Texas prairie. Since then, his music has taken him around the world and to the top of the recording industry charts. Through it all, though, his heart and soul have remained in the high country of the Enchanted Circle.

Michael Martin Murphey, America’s favorite Singing Cowboy, will be making frequent appearances this year at the Mine Shaft Theater, his twelfth consecutive year at the venue. He’ll be performing cowboy songs and tunes of the modern West, as well as many of his hit songs. He also enjoys signing autographs and visiting with the public after the show. The Mineshaft is an intimate - 150 seats - room and there’s not a bad seat in the house. Making reservations is an excellent idea.

The Salvation of Sidney Silvergrabber

Looking for some good, clean, family-style fun? The Red River Inn has a long tradition of great entertainment and will be a busy place this summer. Tuesdays and Saturdays are reserved for Melodrama (Melerdramer?) on the stage of the Mine Shaft Theater. This year’s show is entitled "The Salvation of Sidney Silvergrabber," a perilous tale of greed and redemption in the early days of Red River. Boo the villain, cheer the hero, and laugh till it hurts. It will run from June 20 thru August 19. Show time is 7pm.

Brass Rail (Alpine Inn)

The Brass Rail is Red River’s newest entertainment venue. Located in the Alpine Lodge on Main Street, it’s a multi-purpose facility, accommodating wedding receptions, reunions, conventions and workshops. A full-service bar is available. There’s also a large screen TV, the largest in town, measuring 16’x12’, which makes great satellite viewing for sporting events and special programs.

Mondays and Thursday nights will be busy at "the Rail" this summer. In addition to a variety of musical concerts and shows featuring, among others, The Geezer Brothers (Fritz Davis and Pete Wooten), plans call for dinner theater and some Murder Mystery nights, an old-fashioned Medicine Show and several video nights focusing on Red River history.

Adjacent to the Brass Rail is Chubbie’s Tavern, a small classic pub which will offer live entertainment on special occasions.

Take It To The Streets

Music will be all over town this summer, so keep an eye open. Funfest 2000, a celebration of entertainment, music, magic and art demonstrations will take place in Brandenburg Park (in the center of town) every Saturday from noon till 3. It’s fun and it’s free.

Standing on the corner. Sitting on a porch. Walking down Main Street. Street musicians and performers will be around town, performing for your enjoyment.

Honky Tonk Dance Time

Red River has two classic honky tonks and they are located conveniently across the street from each other on East Main. Built in 1936 as a dance hall and casino, the Motherlode Saloon offers a large dance floor and live music primarily on weekends and special occasions. Six Below is the house band, playing solid honky tonk dance music. Across the street, you can be the star at The Bull O’ The Woods, with Karaoke the main attraction. You can also dance to a large selection on the jukebox and live bands on occasion.

Singles, Duos

If you like acoustic music performed by singles and duos, try the Black Crow Coffee House, Texas Red’s lounge, Lonesome Pine Pub and the Lift House.
