Are You In Good Shape

Ty Bowser Climbing It’s All In The Breathing

Yes, the altitude in and around Red River poses a challenge for even the most physically fit athletes. At 8,750 feet in town to 13,160 feet at the top of nearby Wheeler Peak, the air is thinner and competition takes on a new dimension. You don’t, however, have to be a supreme athlete in top-flight condition to enjoy sporting activities in the high country. Always perform at whatever pace is comfortable for you and push yourself only as far as your prudent and, hopefully thoughtful and informed judgment will allow.

Hard As A Rock

Rock climbing is a popular sport in the Rocky Mountains and an excellent form of recreation. Whether free climbing or using climbing gear, be prepared and never climb alone.

A Loaf of Bread, A Water Bottle and Thou

Good boots and the right socks may truly be the key to hiking happiness. It’s amazing how great you can feel after a sprightly walk. Whether walking by the cool river or through the shadowy forest, tranquillity and a mind cleansed of fog can be yours for the simple investment of time and energy. Walk up a road. Follow a deer path. Take your time. Meander. Take a picnic lunch and someone you love.

On The Run

The 11th Annual Wheeler Peak Mountain Run is scheduled for Sunday, June 18. Beginning in downtown Red River, the race course includes an elevational change of over 2,200 feet - 1,100 feet up the Old Pass and 1,100 back down. Runners come from New Mexico and neighboring states to compete. But if competition isn’t your thing, find a path and run. A special word to joggers: when running in the morning or at dusk, remember that you are running through the mountain lion’s yard and be assured that they can run faster than you. Be careful where you choose to run.

Mountain Biking & Bike Touring

It’s a common sight. Bicycle riding, especially mountain bikes, is a great way to see the sites, not to mention a simple and healthy form of transportation. The Red River Bicycle Club is involved in trail maintenance and the perpetuation of bicycle recreation/transportation. If you don’t have a bike, rent one and peddle you brains out. You’ll be glad you did.

Charge The Net

Tennis anyone? There are two tennis courts located in Mallette Park on Mallette Road. Ask a local for directions. High altitude tennis is fun, but you may want to limit the number of sets. Don’t play until you drop. And if a bear wants the court, by all means, be courteous and yield: they don’t play very often but when they’re in the mood....well, you know.

Mallette Park also has facilities for volleyball, basketball and frisbee golf.
