It's been called a "Winter Wonderland" and a "Picture Postcard." It has also been referred to as "a Diamond in the Snow-covered Rough" and "the Jewel" at the Top of the World and the Enchanted Circle. For thousands and thousands of visitors a year it is simply known as "My Mountain Home." According to the 2000 U.S. Census, Red River officially has 480 residents. That figure doesn't count the people who live year-round at the top of Bobcat Pass or the growing number of permanent dwellers in the Upper Valley. During major holidays and on any given day during season-winter, summer or fall-the population may rise slightly to 8-10,000. Over the past 90 years, Red River has become known as a hospitable place for people from every state in the union and dozens of foreign countries, including Mexico, Canada, Russia, Turkey, the Principality of Monaco and the Duchy of Grand Fenwick. Since this Winter Guide 03/04 publication is supposed to be a source of useful information, helpful tips and recommendations, as well as amusing glimpses and insights which we hope will make your visit more enjoyable, here are a few quick and easy "facts" about our tiny mountain town at the Top of the World. Altitude is 8750 feet above sea level, or 8650 feet if you believe the state highway department sign at the west edge of town. There is one school-grades K-8; 3 churches-Baptist, Catholic and non denominational; 1 full-service medical clinic; 8 galleries and shops offering art and fine craft items; 1 supermarket and 1 convenience store with gas pumps; 1 gas station; 2 ski areas-1 nordic, 1 alpine-and 8 ski rental shops; 4 snowmobile tour companies; 6 saloons; 1 riding stable sometimes open during winter; 1 mechanical bull; 1 arcade with video games, roller skating and pool tables; 1 Community House and 1 Conference Center. Oh, and there are 20 places to eat, 30 lodges/hotels, and a bunch of condos, townhouses, cabins and homes for nightly rental. We enjoy sharing our little town. We hope you enjoy it.
