There's a big attractive wooden sign out front and a bunch of flag poles with the Stars and Stripes waving in the winter breeze. It's Town Hall and it's located on Main Street in the heart of town. You can't miss it. It contains the business offices for the Town of Red River and a branch of the New Mexico Motor Vehicle Department. The building also houses Emergency Services - Dispatch, Police, Fire, EMT and ambulance service, Search and Rescue, and public restrooms for the most basic of tourist emergencies. Look for the signs as you enter the front door. The Red River Chamber of Commerce also has offices there and provides visitor information about local businesses and services, the surrounding Kit Carson Forest, and area sights and attractions. Maps, brochures, magazines and guides like the COC Visitor's Guide and Red River Miner Winter Guide are on a rack in the lobby. They'll also answer any questions you may have about special events throughout the year. (Say "What is Mardi Gras in the Mountains?" They'll give you an earful.) Located by the river in downtown Red River is the Red River Conference Center next to Brandenburg Park. The RRCC is the site of concerts, conventions, conferences, workshops and community social events. Check out the Enchanted Circle Interpretive Center, which highlights the attractions and activities around "the Circle." There are also maps, brochures, handouts, beautiful restroom facilities, and free wireless Internet access if you bring a laptop to our mountain resort/retreat/getaway/hideaway. ![]() The Red River Public Library is located at "The Y" on the east end of town and offers a variety of services to visitors and locals alike. In addition to the classics and latest best-sellers, a huge Audio Book section, and a great collection of local, area and southwest books, free high speed internet access is available, as well as wireless connection for your laptop. Librarians Note: Net use is popular and you may have to wait your turn. Be patient, play nice with others and don't be the Ugly American. Don't want to wait? Have to check you e-mail immediately if not sooner or the sky will fall? Try J. Griffin Company (at the windmill), Reservations Unlimited (across from the market) or the Pioneer Emporium on W. Main St. Mt. Treasures Gallery/Coffee House/Deli/Bistro also offers wireless laptop access so you can sip your favorite beverage, munch and surf at the same time. Some lodges now offer internet access. So, has your e-mail or the world news on Yahoo got you feeling a wee bit funky? Red River Urgent Care is a full-service medical clinic, with special expertise in the treatment of Altitude Illness and Sports Injuries. PA Matt Prewitt and staff are located in the lifthouse of the Red River Ski Area - at the foot of "The Face" by the river - and can be reached at 505-754-2379. Altitude illness is not an unusual situation up here at the top of the world, but there's no need to let it spoil your trip. Treatment is available which can have you feeling great in a short period of time. Altitude illness is usually preventable if ascent is slow. That's seldom the case, however, for travelers who proceed directly from the road to the fun stuff of skiing, snowmobiling, etc. Persons travelling above 8,000 feet (which includes Red River Ski Area and the Enchanted Forest) are most likely to be symptomatic. The chances increase to about 15% when sleeping above 8,000 feet. Being in excellent physical condition has no bearing on one's ability to acclimate to altitude. Whatever, Red River Urgent Care can help. More and more people are investing time and money in pursuit of good physical health. Red River now has a workout center located in the Mountain Shop on E. Main St. Red River Inn offers massage therapy and herbal supplements, and Darcy's Mobile Massage - Darcy L. Banks, LMT - will bring soothing hands to you if you call 505-770-0698. Also many lodges have hot tubs which are very therapeutic after a hard day of playing in the snow. There are three churches in Red River. St Edwin's Catholic Church is located on Silver Bell Trail. First Baptist Church of Red River is located on the west end of town on High Cost Trail and Faith Mountain Fellowship - non-denominational - is at the corner of River Street and Copper King Trail. |
