Mining Equipment

BACK DUMP BUCKET

Also known as a Drag Bucket or a Drag Line, this equipment was used to excavate dirt, sand, and gravel. It was suspended on a cable and powered by a steam engine.

From the Louis Scavardi claim in the Midnight Country

ORE CRUSHER

Made by the Universal Crusher Company, Cedar Rapids, this machine crushed large rock into sand and gravel from which the gold could be extracted.

From the Black Copper Mine four miles south of Red River

ORE BUCKET

Filled with ore, it was hoisted from the shaft by cable. On the surface, as the bucket was moved laterally, a chain attached to the bottom was trapped in a slot, causing the bucket to tip and empty.

From a mine in the Midnight Country

WATER TURBINE

Water taken from the Red River in a long flume provided the power for the turbine. A belt from the turbine powered a drive shaft used to operate other equipment.

From the June Bug Mill located near the June Bug Campground

WATER BUCKET

This was used to raise water or slurry out of the shaft. When the bucket was lowered on a hard surface, an iron peg on the bottom was forced upward, opening the bottom.
