Dianne Hughes is excited to head up the committee that will see to the revival of a special event on the Red River summer calendar.

“It’s Wags & Wine and it’s going to be September 14, 10 am to 5 pm at Brandenburg Park.

There will be lots of fun stuff going on for people and their four-legged friends. There will be specialty vendors with K-9  items, carrying everything from art to jewelry, dog paraphernalia like leashes and treats, all of that stuff! There will also be food vendors, wineries and breweries.

“There will be several demonstrations including dog training experts, K-9 Search & Rescue, dog agility demos. There will be some groomers onsite. There will even be a dog psychic!”

“The Highway 38 Houndogs will be playing. We’ll have an MC to keep things lively and we’re working on a Kissing Booth… with the dogs!

“We’re having great response. When I was getting my committee together before Christmas, people were excited. This is a real learning curve for me. I’ve never worked with the Town before and they’re wonderful to work with: Town Hall, the Conference Center (Department of Tourism), the Red River Chamber of Commerce. Everybody has chipping in, taking me by the hand through the ends and outs.”

During an interview in mid-April, the subject of the  Dog Park that started the Wags & Wine event in 2017 as a fundraising event had Dianne happy to report progress.

“As soon as the ground thaws, the fencing will happen in the field beside the Red River Library at The Y. The entrance is going to be on High Street and the utility gate will be on the highway side.”

Dan Foley is a Town Councilor and also chairs the Parks & Recreation committee for Red River. He says that the Dog Park is part of a comprehensive plan by Parks & Recs and by the Town. Included in upgrading and revitalizing plans will be downtown Brandenburg Park, Mallette Park, the Sports Complex on the town’s West side and some additions to Woerndle Park and the River Walk.

“Long overdue for the people of Red River and our visitors.” Foley adds, “It’s part of the upgrade for the sidewalks, streetlights, streets… It’s important for us now and for future generations!”

Parks and green spaces are a proven asset for any community. Red River parks are for all to enjoy.
